What is 6-APB?

6-APB – also known as 6-(2-Aminopropyl)benzofuran or “Benzofury” – is a novel empathogen (a chemical that produces feelings of connectedness and empathy) of the benzofuran class (similar to chemicals such as 5-MAPB and 5-APB).

6-APB was first synthesised back in 1993 by David Nicholls in the hopes of finding a non-neurotoxic alternative to MDMA (which has the potential to induce neurotoxicity in humans).

Whether or not 6-APB is less neurotoxic than MDMA is still up for debate, as stated in the Sept 2020 study “Beyond ecstasy: Alternative entactogens to MDMA with potential applications in psychotherapy“:

To date, no research has been conducted to ascertain the neurotoxic potential of benzofurans. There are, however, some indications coming from user reports: 5-APB and 6-APB are generally claimed to produce less of a ‘come down’, a period following the acute effects of a drug, characterised by depressed thoughts, lack of energy and general malaise, than MDMA

What are the effects of 6-APB?

The subjective effects of 6-APB are generally reported as very similar to MDMA and 5-MAPB. It is often seen as slightly more stimulating than 5-MAPB, while 5-MAPB is usually described to be more euphoric.

6-APB is significantly longer acting than MDMA. Most experiments tend to last between 7-10 hours; while MDMA lasts between 3-6 hours, often leading to compulsive redosing. Both 5-MAPB and 6-APB are commonly reported as having a less severe “comedown” than MDMA.
