What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide otherwise known as whipped cream chargers, laughing gas or NOS is a Chemical Compound, an oxide of nitrogen with the formula N2O. When kept at room temperature it is a colorless gas with a slightly metallic scent. Nitrous Oxide is widely used in modern medical practice. For example as an anesthetic at the dentist or as an anesthetic during operations.

Chemical Properties of Nitrous Oxide

The pharmacological mechanism action of Nitrous Oxide is still not fully understood. However, it has been shown to directly modulate a range of ligand-gated ion channels, which likely plays a major role in its effects.
While affecting many different ion channels, its anesthetic, hallucinogenic and euphoriant effects are mostly caused by the fact its inhibition of the NMDA receptor-mediated currents, therefore you feel effects like euphoria. As well as its effects on the ion channels, laughing gas may act to imitate nitric oxide in the central nervous system, this can explain why nitrous oxide has similar sedating and antianxiety effects.
