What Is 4-HO-EPT?
4-HO-EPT is a member of the tryptamine class. 4-HO-EPT or 4-Hydroxy-N-ethyl-N-propyltryptamine is a chemical that has been said to induce psychedelic effects. Anecdotal reports have mentioned cognitive effects such as mood change and alteration of behaviour. It is structurally similar to another compound of the same class psilocin (4-HO-DMT). 4-HO-DMT is an active component in magic mushrooms or psychedelic mushrooms that acts on the receptors of the brain. It is important to note that 4-HO-EPT is not for human consumption, adequate measures should be taken when experimental research takes place.

4-HO-EPT Chemical Properties
Chemical Formula: C15H22N2O

Molar Mass: 246.354 g/mol

4-HO-EPT is part of the tryptamine class. All tryptamines (including 4-HO-DMT, the main active ingredient in magic mushrooms) share a structure made up of an amino group that is attached to a bicyclic indole heterocyclic which is attached at R3 via an ethyl side chain.

A substitution takes places at R4 of its indole heterocycle by a hydroxyl functional group OH-. Bound to the tryptamine backbone is a propyl and ethyl chain connected to the terminal amine Rn.

4-HO-EPT Usage
Although little research has been done on 4-HO-EPT, there does seem to be some consistency regarding the effects of the research chemical on experimental research participants.

The following are some potential effects of 4-HO-EPT, due to the lack of research that has been done on 4-HO-EPT this is far from an exhaustive list:

Improved creativity
Increased ability in problem solving
Easing of anxiety/depression
Emotional regulation
Breaking the habit of addiction
What Are The Potential Side-Effects of 4-HO-EPT?
It is important to take caution when experimenting with 4-HO-EPT due to the lack of research that has been shared on the chemical.

The following is by no means an exhaustive list of the potential side-effects of 4-HO-EPT but will give an idea of the potential side-effects that may be experienced when research is conducted with the chemical.

Some of the known side-effects of 4-HO-EPT include:

Increased heart rate: this seems to be a common side-effect regardless of dose amount.
Pupil dilation: pupils are likely to dilate when the chemical takes effect.
Hallucinations: it has been found in experiments that 4-HO-EPT can cause hallucinations (both auditory and visual).
Nausea: the few anecdotal reports on the chemical that have surfaced indicate that nausea is possible when 4-HO-EPT is administered.
4-HO-EPT Tolerance
While 4-HO-EPT is not considered fit for human consumption, some experimental research has indicated that tolerance is built quickly to the substance. This will not only mean a reduced effect from 4-HO-EPT if taken again within a short period of time from the initial ingestion, but the tolerance might also affect the results when experiments are done with other chemicals that are known for their psychedelic effects.

It may take 3 days for the tolerance to the effect of 4-HO-EPT to be reduced to half and 7 days to return the participant to their original state of tolerance (the estimate is based on the understanding that 4-HO-EPT or any other such chemicals are not used within the ‘recovery’ time).

Legality:
USA – While 4-HO-EPT is unscheduled under US law, it can potentially land a researcher in trouble under the Federal Analogue Act, due to the fact that Psilocin is a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act.

UK – the possession of 4-HO-EPT is restricted according to the Psychoactive Substances Act of 2016. It is considered a Class-A drug.

Germany – A recent shift in German law saw the production and import of 4-HO-EPT to become illegal and punishable by law (New Psychoactive Substances Act). Possession is illegal however not punishable.
